Birchwood’s Municipal History

Since 1974, Birchwood has been part of Cheshire County (formerly Lancashire until the local government reorganisation in 1974).

It has been within Warrington Borough Unitary Council since 1998 and was originally developed via Warrington & Runcorn Development Corporation which became the Commission for New Towns in the 1960s and 1970s.

The Council was initially formed as part of the existing Croft Parish Council in 1981/82, which became Birchwood and Croft Parish Council in 1986. In April 1994 it became Birchwood Parish Council, and finally became Birchwood Town Council in January 2000.
